From Survivors to Advocates

A Story of Resilience

In October 1975, our family embarked on a journey that would shape our lives forever. Fleeing the horrors of the Cambodian genocide, we sought refuge in Medford, OR. The genocide had ravaged our homeland, claiming the lives of our loved ones and destroying everything we knew. Yet, amidst the darkness, we found resilience and determination.

As the second eldest of six children, I quickly adapted to a new language and culture, supported by generous sponsors and the unwavering strength of my family. Despite facing numerous challenges and relocating several times in search of better opportunities, our parents instilled in us the value of education above all else.

In the Pursuit of Education

Settling in Virginia, our parents embarked on the challenging yet rewarding journey of entrepreneurship, starting a business with food trucks. Education remained a cornerstone in our household, and despite the odds, we pursued higher education, built successful careers, and raised our own families.

Our children, Bryce and Bre, graduated from prestigious universities, propelled by the belief that knowledge opens doors to limitless opportunities. Their achievements stand as a testament to the transformative power of education.

A Return to Cambodia

In recent years, a trip to Cambodia reignited our connection to our homeland. Witnessing the stark realities faced by rural communities, particularly in education, left an indelible mark on our hearts.

Visiting a school we had helped fund in the rural countryside of Stoung, Siem Reap province, was a turning point in our journey. Despite limited resources and unimaginable challenges, both students and teachers displayed unwavering dedication and gratitude for the opportunity to learn and teach.

Igniting Change

The scenes we witnessed at the school stirred a fire within us. The sight of classrooms filled beyond capacity, students solving calculus problems on chalkboards, and teachers earning meager salaries highlighted the urgent need for change.

Inspired by the resilience of the students and educators we encountered, we vowed to make a difference. Their determination became the driving force behind the establishment of Koun Khmer Foundation.

Our Mission

At Koun Khmer Foundation, we are committed to bridging the educational gap and empowering rural Khmer students with equitable access to learning resources. Rooted in our belief that education is a fundamental human right, we strive to provide essential tools, internet access, and hardware to unlock the potential of every child.

Through collaboration, innovation, and advocacy, we seek to create a future where education is truly accessible to all, breaking down barriers and building pathways to success for generations to come.

Join us on our journey as we work towards a brighter tomorrow, where every child has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society. Together, we can rewrite the story of education in Cambodia and beyond.
